Carlie Weiser, an incoming junior at Giddings High in Texas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap winning national titles in both the discus throw and the shot put in the 15-16 division at the AAU Club National Championships on July 14-15 in Satellite Beach, Fla., followed by the USATF Junior Olympics on July 31 and August 1 at University of North Florida in Jacksonville and capped by her performances August 3rd and 6th at the AAU Junior Olympic Games at Humble High in Texas. Weiser won her fourth consecutive shot put national title at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, beginning with the 13-year-old division in 2018, and prevailed for the second year in a row in the discus. She ranked No. 6 among all high school competitors this year in the shot put at 50-0.50 (15.25m) and No. 8 in the discus at 167-3 (50.98m). Weiser, 16, is the only prep thrower in U.S. history to rank among the top 10 all-time sophomores in both the discus and the shot put. She shares how meaningful it was to compete in her first UIL 4A state meet in May in Austin after the event was canceled last year as a result of the pandemic, and how significant it was to secure championships in both events. Weiser explains how inspiring it was to eclipse 50 feet with the 4-kilogram shot put for the first time in April after surpassing the mark multiple times earlier in her career with the 6-pound implement. She also examines her improvement in the discus during the past year, and how exciting it is to have the top two returning high school competitors in the country next year both representing Texas, with Swedish athlete and Lewisville Marcus incoming junior Emma Sralla elevating to the No. 4 all-time sophomore performer at 170-8 (52.02m) in March. Weiser also shares the motivation gained from watching Olympic discus gold medalist Valarie Allman, a volunteer assistant at Texas, along with shot put silver medalist Raven Saunders and how she aspires to represent the U.S. on an international level during her career. She speaks about finding a balance with her academic schedule and training, and how she has managed to demonstrate such poise and composure in elite meets, with the help of her support group and the coaching staff at Giddings.
